In 1782 Jane and Cassandra, her sister, were sent to school in Oxford, Southampton, and the Abbey School in Reading.

Pride and Prejudice is considered one of Jane Austen's most significant writing and is also the most known of the public. The novel was written in its first version between 1796 and 1797, it was finally published in January 1813. Its success in bookstore was immediate, but even if the first edition was quickly exhausted, Jane Austen draws no notoriety: the novel is published without mention of his name ("by the author of Sense and Sensibility") because her condition of "woman of the good society" forbids her to claim the status of writer in her own right.

Behind the sentimental adventures of the five Bennet girls, Jane Austen faithfully portrays the rigidities of English society at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Through the behavior and reflections of Elizabeth Bennet, her main character, she raises the issues facing women of the small country gentry to ensure economic security and social status. At this time and in this environment, the solution is almost inevitably through marriage: this explains why the two major themes of Pride and Prejudice are money and marriage, which serve as a basis for the development of secondary themes.

Pride and prejudice has experienced many adaptations including cinematographic and theatrical. In 2005, Joe Wright adapted Jane Austen's famous book, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen.
